Birding on the Fly

On a whirlwind weekend, my wife and I made a quick 15-minute pitstop at Hoskote Lake for a birding fix. I managed to catch glimpses of some hidden feathered treasures, while my wife happily scored fresh veggies from the nearby farm. See our mini-adventure in pics!

~~~
A Rosy Starling, one of about 50 migrants gracing the lake with their presence.
~~~
Our birding luck continued with the sighting of a Long-tailed Shrike.

~~~
A Blyth's Reed Warbler, flitting from one precarious perch to another. This little Houdini kept me on edge, but I managed to snag a snapshot – just enough to confirm its identity.
~~~
A Coppersmith Barbet, as if aware of our time crunch, graced us with its presence! Perched perfectly in the open, it allowed me to take these three quick snaps.

~~~
"Aha!" I exclaimed, spotting a lone Wood Sandpiper. It strutted gracefully in the shallows, practically begging to be photographed.
~~~
An awkward teenager of a bronze-winged jacana, caught between chick fluff and adult elegance, teetered on the shore.

~~~
Sentinel of the marsh, a grey heron surveyed its domain.
~~~
A unique rock pigeon, not grey like its kin, sported a fascinating pattern. Abandoned pet or generations in the wild? Nature is full of wonders.

~~~
Talk about saving the best for last! My birding blitz ended on a high note with a dazzling purple sunbird.
~~~
My wife, ever the green thumb, couldn't resist the allure of fresh, farm-grown vegetables. We spent the remaining minutes filling her bag with plump chayotes and flat beans.

~~~
Sure, we didn't compile an extensive bird list or fill our cart to overflowing. But in those fleeting 15 minutes, we traded city noise for birdsong, and returned home with a renewed sense of calm and a bag full of goodness.
  2. Hello Shiju,
    Great series of photos from your quick pit stop.
    The Rosy Starling, the Coppersmith's Beard, the Purple Honeysucker are really great, species that I never see here because they do not occur in the Netherlands.
    Good that your wife also enjoyed herself on the farm.
    I enjoyed your blog again.
    Greetings Irma
  9. Beautiful photos and so many birds, they don't occur here in the Netherlands at all. Except for the heron. Ah, what sweeties, those birds with so much color on their little bodies. I really enjoy seeing them.
    In response to your question at the end of your blog, I like to cycle to the forest. Within 15 minutes, I'm out of the street and in the woods. I love hearing the birds start singing again after winter. Yesterday, I saw a robin that stayed perched for a long time, and I just stood there watching it. Gorgeous!
  11. Here in Naples, nature sounds like the lone cry of a limpkin, a lonely bird that sounds like a peacock. I can only imagine what you'd discover in a half hour! What did you make for dinner with your vegtables? Yes, I used my new Canon Power Shot in Costa Rica. Now, I can zoom again. :)
  16. Remarkable to get so many photos in such a short time! I have never eaten chayote, but saw a tree full of them on a recent trip to Costa Rica. Some time maybe I’ll get to taste one.
  17. That's such a great idea to take advantage of stopping there for even a short visit. The fresh veggies sound wonderful too and your wife always looks so stylish and beautiful. I hike some trails that have traffic noise but I have found that if I get deeper into the forest, it is perfectly quiet. That's what I do just about every hike now....go off deeper in the forest. It's calming and soothing.
