Courtship ritual of Indian peafowl

Here's another story from the Karanji lake, Mysore. During my visit, I was able to witness two peacocks competing for the attention of a peahen.

This peacock made the first move by passively approaching the peahen...

The cool and composed attitude didn't seem to impress the peahen...

Then came the other peacock with a dazzling display of tail plumage, courtship antics and loud screeching. The peahen was impressed...

The Indian peacock has very flashy plumage, with a bright blue head and neck, but the Indian peahen is a drab, mottled brown in comparison. The male needs his bright feathers to attract a mate, and the female needs to be able to blend in with the bushes so that predators cannot see her while she is incubating her eggs.

  5. I would love to have seen this. I've heard they do quite a display in their bid for the female. Looks like they will have to work a little harder! LOL

  9. Stunning shots. Apparently the Peahen likes, "Flashy" over calm, cool & collected. At any rate the male is a gorgeous bird.

  17. Incredible shots of the peacocks and hen, such beautiful feathers. A neighbor of ours had peacocks and 3 came down and were hanging around our yard once, they could fly up to our rooftop or into some tall cedar trees.

  32. I never once, during my 15 months in India, got to see a peacock displayed so beautifully. I agree with Indrani, that boisterous male would be great for her "Frozen Moments".

  33. I love peacocks..even wrote a poem about them in my book. Elephants are still my favorites but the peacock males definitely strut and show off their plumage ( like a lot of the Indian men I know!! ).
