Shashthi is a Hindu folk goddess, venerated as the benefactor and protector of children (especially, as the giver of male child). She is also the deity of vegetation and reproduction and is believed to bestow children and assist during childbirth.
Barren women desiring to conceive and mothers seeking to ensure the protection of their children will worship Shashthi and request her blessings and aid.
On this facade of a Hindu temple, goddess Shashthi is pictured as a motherly figure nursing an infant.

ReplyDeleteHow nice to have such a goddess. I love that about the Hindu religion - a secial god & goddess for so many things - as well as special ceremonies & rituals. Everything is so bright & colorful. I treasure my own Ganesha, given to me by special friends in India.

ReplyDeleteThe colors are spectacular! Love learning about the various gods and goddess. Who are the others depicted in the picture?
ReplyDeleteThe one on top with the blue skin is the main deity of this temple. His name is Murugan. According to Hindu epics, he is the son of fire.
DeleteThe one with the potbelly is Kuber, the god of wealth. He is often depicted as a fat man, adorned with jewels.
