Mother's Day birding

My Sunday birding trip to Hoskote lake in Bangalore was replete with display of motherly love by some birds. Here are some birds I saw on Mother's Day...

A nest with two day old chicks of Indian Robin. Waiting for its mother for feed...

Soon mother arrives with feed...

Father also chips in...

Father has stuffed a lot of food for the babies...

The chicks go back to sleep after the hearty meal...

It is so soothing to watch the contented chicks sleep...

A female Common kingfisher had just caught a fish...

She tosses and thrashes the fish for a while...

She looked satisfied after the big meal...

Talking about meals, caterpillars are the favourite meal of  cuckoos. There were plenty of caterpillars crawling in the open, foolishly offering themselves to preying cuckoos...

A Jacobin's Cuckoo catches a big caterpillar...

It unfurls its crest after the meal...

Meanwhile, the early morning sun was throwing some spectacular rays from behind the clouds...

A female Pied Bushchat seemed to look for food...

Black-headed Ibis...

Grey-headed Swamphen...

Plain Prinia...

Red-rumped swallow...

Nest of a white-cheeked barbet...

I waited for some time for the barbet to show up. She popped out her head....

Another selfless motherly love on display. I noticed the broken bill. Probably, she got injured while burrowing that hole for her family...

She was keeping an eye on lurking predators...

Cattle egret in breeding plumage...

I could not identify this bird...

A white-throated kingfisher, all wet after a dip in the lake...

An Indian pond heron was on a fishing expedition...

Wishing a happy Mother's Day to all the mothers!
