A toast to the birds of Jakkur

It rained heavily the whole night. Sunday birding looked bleak. But morning brought changing weather with fleecy clouds and patches of some bright blue optimistic sky. I decided to head to Jakkur lake after a gap of more than two years. Here are the pics...
...
I parked my car near a peepal tree, where roosting Alexandrine Parakeets are usually seen. A Spotted owlet was looking excitedly at the rising sun...
...
His attention soon turned towards me...
...
...
He flew to another branch, but continued to give me that stare...
...
...

...
There was no sign of the parakeets. I decided to make one round of the lake and return to catch the parakeets. Saw a Black kite who was ready to fly...
...
...
A Spotted dove was spotted next...
...
At the lake, Little grebes were seen diving and searching for meal...
...

...
A fisherman was flushing out water from his coracle...
...
Jakkur lake is a 160-acre urban lake with a 5km perimeter...

...
I watched the acrobatics of a female Purple-rumped Sunbird...
...
An Indian Pond-Heron perched on a tree...
...
A Glossy Ibis foraged in the floating vegetation...
...
Seen close by was a Black-headed Ibis...
...
A Grey Heron was giving them company...
...
The reflection...
...
Beautiful bloom of Queen's crepe-myrtle, also known as Pride of India...
...
Back at the Peepal tree, I was able to spot Alexandrine Parakeets. These lipstick winged beauties with their large bills are quite a spectacle...
...
I watched the Alexandrine parakeets for sometime. They were constantly mobbed by Brahminy kites and Black drongos...
...
...

...

...

...

...
A Black Drongo flew in for area domination. The parakeet didn't give up. The drongo was shooed...

...
The extremely territorial Black Drongos swooped around and hawked insects...
...

...

...
As the sun gathered strength, butterflies and insects became active. Here's a common Sailor butterfly...
...
And the last sighting for the day was this Heterorrhina elegans beetle...
...
I returned home satisfied with the days sightings. Hope you liked the post. Do post your comment below...

  1. You amaze and inspire me every week. I learned just this week that most Native Americans do not like owls, they are regarded as evil spirits somehow. They think that even photos of them have power.

What an adorable little owl - you certainly had his attention! Great photos again, I especially like the parakeet action photos and the photo of the magnificent black kite in flight! Thanks for showing the area too - it's hard to believe that such a variety of animals is so close to a city. Nice that it is!

  27. I have baled out our boat many times after a storm just to go fishing. Sometimes when pump doesn't work the boat is sunk. More baling. Two photographs of Jakkur lake remind me of our lives here. I admire all your images of various birds and the knowledge you have of them. Wonderful blog every week.
