Birding in the rain

Monsoon is in full swing in many parts of India. Bangalore has been having spells of rain. This week,  I visited Saul Kere lake with an umbrella in one hand and camera in the other. I didn't walk around much and spent a lot of time waiting for birds to show up. Here's what I saw...

...
Eurasian Coot chick was following the mother coot...
...
Purple Heron caught a fish, quite effortlessly in the rain...
...
Pheasant-tailed Jacana couple flew around enjoying the rain...
...
...
Spot-billed Pelican was also seen flying...
...
The Pheasant-tailed Jacana couple looked territorial. They were driving away all intruders to their space...

...
Rain stopped for sometime and a solitary Intermediate Egret began his quest for a meal...
...

...

...

...
Spot-billed Pelican was floating gently...
...
A male Pheasant-tailed Jacana was incubating eggs. Yes, the male does the incubation while the female defends the nest...
...
Bronze-winged Jacana was seen next...

...
And a Glossy Ibis was wading in the shallows...
...
I continued to watch the beautiful Pheasant-tailed Jacana foraging in the floating vegetation...
...

...

...
My attention was drawn to a solitary Little Grebe...
...
And a Spot-billed pelican looked like a tale of serenity...
...
Once again, a Pheasant-tailed Jacana displayed its brown bordered white wings, visible in flight...
...

...

...
Another Spot-billed pelican...
...
And another visual treat from a Pheasant-tailed Jacana...
...

...
A Purple Heron was ready with its sharp beak to spear the prey...
...

...
Eurasian Moorhen was shivering out water and preening...
...
And a Little Cormorant was sitting and drying wet feathers...
...
An Indian Pond Heron in breeding plumage...
...
Purple Swamphen was looking for a snack...
...
A solitary Indian Spot-billed Duck was dabbling for its morning meal...
...

...

...
A White-throated Kingfisher watches potential prey from its high perch and takes off for the hunt...
...
...

...
A Green bee-eater...
...
Last sighting of the day was this Red-whiskered Bulbul. Rain started pelting down again and I called it a day...
...

  1. Hello, :=) There is nothing I can say, that I haven't said before. There are so many interesting species of Indian birds and in either sun or rain you do an excellent job of photographing them. I have mentioned in other posts how I find the Pheasant-tailed Jacana to be a most attractive bird, but I will add that is also an elegant bird and I have enjoyed the many photographs
you have shared in this post.

  2. It is always amazing how many bird species you find in one of your outings, and manage to photograph so beautifully. I do love that pelican with the topknot. You never, ever disappoint.

  3. Nice series of photos, you can clearly see that it is raining.
I really like the pheasant tail Jacana pair, they are not here in the Netherlands.
Also nice shots of the egret and the purple heron.
The white-throated kingfisher and the green bee-eater are also not found in the Netherlands.
I have enjoyed your blog again.
    Greetings Irma

  6. These water birds don’t seem to mind the rain at all. Here many of the songbirds hide out when the weather is wet. Your photos as always are gorgeous. What vivid colors!

  14. That's a first for me, birding with a camera and an umbrella. But as usual you returned with many fine photos, not least the Purple Heron. I hope the monsoons subside soon and you can get out minus the umbrella.

  21. The details in your photos are always amazing. It usually surprises people when they see that the Coot and Moorhens have long legs. Love the backgrounds of so many of your pics too...the green and yellows are pretty!

  28. What a fabulous wetland again in Bangalore!

The first six or seven photos showed me the diversity of this wetland and the avian wonders.

  29. Oh, a photo shoot in the rain is worse than when snowing! But still you have enough beauties here! the purple swamphen has enviable colors, and love your captures of the wings of the pheasant Jacanda. Hope you have some days when it's not raining this week:)

  30. The white-throated kingfisher is a handsome bird with the turquoise feathering. The little grebe with its lime spot is sweet too. The swamphen is colorful. A room painting and decorated with all of those colors would be gorgeous. The Jacana probably makes all the other Jacanas jealous with those jaunty neck feathers and that fabulous tail.

  31. Of course! Why should a little rain stop an intrepid birder?

  32. Rain or shine, your photos never cease to amaze me. Congrats for your feature this week at Inspire Me Monday at Create With Joy!

  33. What a luscious walk in the drops ... rain is a true challenge to photograph because of its fluidity but also ... umbrella in one hand and camera in the other. :)
