Last weekend at Saul Kere

Last weekend was made special by some visiting birds that were seen in good numbers at Saul Kere. Here are the pics...

...
The day started with the sighting of a Black-rumped Flameback Woodpecker. Got just a glimpse before it vanished...
...
Lesser Whistling-Ducks and Garganeys were seen in good numbers...
...
I focused on the Garganey flock. In the middle you can see a breeding male with quite attractive appearance...
...
Garganeys breed in Europe and are strictly migratory. Their entire population move to southern Africa, Asia and Australia during winter...
...
Lesser Whistling-Ducks mingled well with the Garganey. They migrate from islands near India...
...
Lesser Whistling-Ducks are nocturnal feeders and during the day, they just sit around, occasionally making the whistling call 'seasick seasick'. Perhaps they are still seasick after crossing the Laccadive Sea...
...
I decided to move ahead and return when the light improves. A pair of Purple Heron were already in the Valentine's day mood. I watched them with voyeuristic pleasure...
...

...
I returned to the Garganey area...
...
A Eurasian Coot was seen. Sighting a standing coot is quite rare...
...
Again I watched the Garganeys...
...
...
Some Garganeys in flight...
...
Juxtaposed with a Lesser Whistling-Duck...

...

...
...

...
And the Lesser Whistling-Ducks still patiently wait for their nightlife to begin...
...
Here's how they fly...

...
A White-breasted Waterhen was foraging stealthily...
...
Last sighting of the day was of a Coppersmith Barbet. I clicked a few pictures of nest excavation...
...

  11. I'm not sure I've ever seen a photo that moved me more than the first purple heron image. Well, both, but especially that first one. Wow. It was like a painting.

  14. Your Purple Heron pictures are stunning. You really captured some wonderful interplay. And yes, Garganeys are quite scarce and I see one or two a year, that's all. They are very much a spring bird, mostly in May or even June.

  20. Hello, :=) A superb collection of images. I like the Purple Heron shots, and I think it's the first time I've seen the Coppersmith Barbet on your post! It's a colourful lovely looking bird. I liked the way you mentioned the Whistling Ducks Flight pattern. Probably when they take off. It does differ from other ducks. Thank you for another enjoyable post.

  28. Oh, that was another nice batch of great bird photos! I didn't know that the Garganeys winter in India. I think I've already seen them in the Neusiedlersee nature reserve. I had to laugh about the call of the Lesser Whistling-Ducks - 'seasick seasick' 😂 and I was happy about the Purple Herons in Valentine's day mood: Soon there will be offspring of these beautiful birds. Thanks for the nice birdwatching tour!
Happy Valentine and all the best,

  38. The barbet is such a handsome bird. But the double herons steal the show. I love that one and remember it from instagram.

  39. The Garganey males are quite handsome. The Herons seem fond of each other. The Barbet is colorful. I enjoyed seeing them all but the Woodpecker might be my favorite.

  43. Beautiful birding day! I love the individual birds and as always you show their "personalities" (behavior and habits) so well. I wish I could see them in real life! I also love the photo wall over your (very neat and orderly) shoe shelf in your entryway. What a wonderful incentive to put on those shoes and get outside, binoculars and camera in hand!! Thanks for sharing.

  44. PS: I meant to say that I also love the "group shots" showing the great number of some of the birds that you saw -- its wonderful that these species are doing so well.

    ReplyDelete
  45. You are amazing! I love them all!

  46. Oh my goodness I don't know where to begin, so many beautiful birds, some I'm not sure of their names, and such beautiful nature photos, you are excellent at shooting photos. Thank you.
