A Rain Washed Morning At Saul Kere

The rain had arrived the previous night.

After weeks of dusty roads, tired trees, and that familiar summer haze hanging over Bangalore, the overnight showers changed everything. By morning, the city looked washed clean, fresh, and alive again. So I headed to Saul Kere.

On weekends, Saul Kere is usually full of birdwatchers scanning every branch for movement. But this weekday morning, I had the place almost entirely to myself. Just me and the birds slowly coming alive after the rain.

And what a morning it turned out to be.

Even the common birds somehow looked brighter after the rain.

Here are a few frames from that peaceful weekday morning at Saul Kere.

~~~
The first bird of the day was this beautiful female Asian Koel. She sat quietly on a branch while the surrounding trees echoed with endless “koo...ooo” calls from excited males. It sounded like there were multiple suitors nearby, each trying their luck.
~~~
The sky slowly turned shades of orange and gold while the trees stood in silhouette against the glowing morning sun.

~~~
A Wire tailed Swallow took a quiet break on a wire.
~~~
Dusky Crag Martins were constantly flying low over the water.

~~~
Meanwhile, an Oriental Darter, better known as the Snake Bird, was having a far more successful morning.
~~~
An Indian Silverbill posed briefly on a thorny branch, looking completely unbothered by the sharp spikes around it.

~~~
A tiny Pale billed Flowerpecker paused briefly. Tiny birds, tiny patience window.
~~~
The Asian Green Bee eaters were putting on quite a show in the golden morning light.

~~~
A female Small Minivet posed beautifully.
~~~
A Scaly breasted Munia clung gently to the grass.

~~~
The Rufous Treepie was impossible to ignore that morning. Loud calls, constant movement, and plenty of attitude as it hopped around the trees demanding attention.
~~~
A Shikra suddenly sliced through the quiet morning, sending smaller birds into instant panic mode.

~~~
A Yellow billed Babbler posed briefly between its usual noisy conversations.
~~~
A Black rumped Flameback clung to a tree trunk, completely focused on its search for breakfast.

~~~
A Spotted Owlet sat quietly watching the world wake up around it.
~~~
A Common Tailorbird turned out to be the final sighting of the morning. Tiny, restless, and always busy, it felt like a fitting little farewell before I packed up and headed home from a peaceful morning at Saul Kere.

~~~
That wrapped up a wonderful weekday morning at Saul Kere after the much needed rain. Quiet trails, fresh greenery, and plenty of beautiful bird moments made it a memorable one.
Hope you enjoyed this post. Do leave a comment and let me know which sighting or frame you liked the most.
  1. The Snake bird appears to be having fun with his meal! I think my favorite is the owl photo. Love how sharp and crisp all your photos are!
  3. What beautiful photos, Shiju.
    So many beautiful species that you never see here.
    The swallows are also becoming fewer and fewer here, especially the Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica); I haven't seen that one at all. Last year there were still many flying around here, now nothing anymore.
    I wish you a nice weekend.
    All the best, Irma
  13. I can see that the rain did not hamper seeing a wonderful selection of colorful birds! The Snake Bird photo tossing up the fish in the air in order to swallow it was an amazing action shot! Bravo!
  14. I also tend to do day trips during the week, when the tourists are less likely to be crowding places and roads. These are wonderful shots and you're definitely right about the crispness of the freshly washed morning helping everything look clean.
  20. I took my time enjoying your beautiful photos. The bird catching the little fish really stayed with me. But most of all, your country’s cuckoo caught my attention. Here in the Netherlands I have heard a cuckoo, but I have never seen one. I suspect it looks different from yours, but surely they must be related? I wish you and your family a good week.
  21. I saw a woodpecker this morning, pecking on our campfire wood. It was beautiful, but not as striking as the Flameback. The birds are calling here in the morning now, and I love that. Wow! So many new ones today. And your photos look like they are from a birding magazine.
  27. That Oriental Darter -- a fascinating looking bird but an even better photo. You had to be thrilled when you nailed that one -- it's perfect in every single way. Even you neutral-toned birds like that shikra are stuningly beautiful.
  28. They're all so pretty. Especially like the yellow one, but I think the first photo is my favorite this week. He looks like he'd be the King of the Branches. :)
  30. Birding after rain can be a great experience, especially if you want to take pictures - the rain cleans the air so well.
    Wonderful collection of pictures!
