CR and I set out for Bethamangala in Kolar, but a quick call to our local policeman birder acquaintance changed our plans and led us to a spot buzzing with bird activity! The highlights included the stunning European Roller, European Bee-eaters, Marshall’s Iora, Lesser Whitethroat, and even some Blackbucks.
We wrapped up the day with Mulbagal dosa at two different places, because birding and food go hand in hand!
It's another maxi post, folks! Hope you stick around and read till the end.
~~~
The drive along the expressway was smooth, except for the thick fog around sunrise that reduced visibility considerably! Here's a video capturing the journey.
~~~
The sunrise was putting on quite a show when we stopped to call our local policeman birder acquaintance. Little did we know that his suggestion to make a U-turn would lead us to a far more rewarding birding hotspot!
~~~
The suggested hotspot was beside a hillside, with lush green vegetation, rocky outcrops, and a beautiful sunrise sky.
~~~
As we settled in to explore the area, we spotted this mother dog and her adorable pup by the roadside.
~~~
A lone tree stood silhouetted against the golden morning sky.
~~~
Our first feathered subjects were these gorgeous Brahminy Starlings!
~~~
Among the early sightings was this Lesser Whitethroat.
~~~
The hillside was dotted with these beautiful Sahyadri Dew-Grass flowers.
~~~
The rocky outcrops gave the hillside a rugged charm.
~~~
European Bee-eaters! These colourful beauties perched on a wire.
~~~
After a while, the European Bee-eaters descended to feed, giving us a closer look at their stunning colours.
~~~
Every now and then, a few Blackbucks appeared, only to disappear into the bushes at the slightest hint of our presence.
~~~
A European Bee-eater takes flight.
~~~
A Eurasian Collared Dove perched on a power line.
~~~
Birds often sought out these lone trees for a perch.
~~~
A Brahminy Starling perched gracefully on a branch.
~~~
Another Brahminy Starling surveys its surroundings from a thorny perch.
~~~
I followed a Marshall’s Iora, also known as the White-tailed Iora, as it flitted among the sunlit branches.
~~~
The Bay-backed Shrike was a striking sight.
~~~
A male Blackbuck moved quietly through the golden grass.
~~~
The Indian Silverbill perched on an overhead wire.
~~~
The Red-vented Bulbul perched on a bare branch, holding a tiny green leaf in its beak.
~~~
The policeman birder had to report for duty at 9 AM, but before leaving, he was kind enough to take us to a nearby spot where a European Roller was perched on an overhead wire.
~~~
Just as we were soaking in the sighting, the European Roller took flight.
~~~
The European Roller continued to oblige, moving between exposed perches among the reddish foliage.
~~~
From there, we headed to the grasslands of KGF, where the landscape opened up into a beautiful expanse of sunlit greenery.
~~~
A European Bee-eater perched on an overhead cable against the brilliant blue sky at KGF.
~~~
We continued along the path, watching the Blackbucks grazing on either side, though they remained at a distance. Scattered across the grasslands, the herds blended beautifully into the landscape, their tawny coats catching the warm sunlight.
~~~
Some grazed quietly in the soft morning light, while others stood alert, their slender bodies silhouetted against the sunlit grass.
~~~
Suddenly, a male sprang into a graceful leap, his long, spiralling horns catching the light as he bounded across the meadow.
~~~
A Long-tailed Shrike perched on an overhead wire.
~~~
The Lantana bushes were in full bloom.
~~~
The sicklebush was in bloom, its delicate, powder-puff-like flowers displaying a striking blend of pale pink, white, and golden yellow.
~~~
Amid all the European visitors, there was an Asian Green Bee-eater too!
~~~
We took a little break for a quick photo at the “I ❤️ KGF” sign. A trip to Kolar Gold Fields wouldn’t be complete without a souvenir shot!
~~~
After that, hunger kicked in, and following the policeman’s recommendation, we headed to a Mulbagal dosa place, only to discover that they serve that particular variety exclusively in the evenings!
Next, we called Prasad’s Mulbagal Dosa, which usually closes by noon. Although we were still 50 minutes away, Prasad kindly agreed to serve us.
The place was absolutely packed, but our plates arrived surprisingly quickly. Finally, it was time to dig into that delicious, golden-brown Mulbagal dosa!
~~~
CR wasn’t quite satisfied yet. One round of Mulbagal dosa simply wasn’t enough! So, we decided to make one more stop at our regular favourite, Shettara Thindi, about 12 km away.
By the time we got there, we were hungry all over again and ready for another round of that irresistible Mulbagal dosa!
~~~
And that brought our memorable outing to a delicious end!
Hope you enjoyed the post. Do leave a comment and let me know what you think!

Wonderful creatures! and great food. All the best, Regula
ReplyDeleteYou hit the jackpot with skies, blackbuks and an incredible variety of birds.
ReplyDeleteA very productive outing with beautiful photos. That's a wonderful sunrise capture to start off your morning!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I had way too much visual sugar in your dessert present. Golly, I love it!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
ReplyDeleteIncredible images. I haven't seen this sicklebush blooms before. Splendid. Dosa is a good choice, however, I am currently craving chole bhature.
ReplyDeleteWorth a Thousand Words
That was excellent finding. I too was excited when I first spotted chestnut bee water long back. Policeman friend was lucky for you. The depth of field in sunrise shot and a minimalist tree shot is astonishing
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful day of birding and the lovely blackbucks! I’m not sure what you were eating but it looks so good, I’d love to try it someday.

I love those rainbow bee eaters, the the European roller was a joy in flight. Your policeman birder friend was obviously in the know of where to go. Looks like there will a return trip one day. Fabulous photos as always. Enjoy your weekend ahead and thankyou for visiting my blog this week.
ReplyDeleteSo many beautiful images. As always I enjoyed the birds but also appreciated the beautiful countryside and the adorable puppy. You made me hungry with the lunch. The restaurant was so good to wait for your arrival even though they closed early.
ReplyDeleteI’d come along just for the Mulbagal Dosa. The birds would be a bonus!
ReplyDeleteYou always take such wondrous pictures, that I have an extremely difficult time choosing a favorite one. Peace!

Beautiful animals but this time the sicklebush stole the show - I´ve never seen such a fluffy beauty before!
ReplyDeleteAnd the food, hmmmm!
Your change of plans net a wonderful day. Thanks so much for showing me these amazing sights.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous collection of photos. Thanks for sharing these.
ReplyDeleteLoved the European bee eater photos the best and the dosaas have made me hungry!
ReplyDeleteI liked your souvenir shot -- nice to have a face to go with the blog. Your sightings today were outstanding, each and every one. Sometimes a U turn is a good thing. And loved the lighting on that city street near the beginning.
ReplyDeleteI love the photo of you my friend. And I'm sure I would enjoy trying to the yummy meal you chose. The flavors might be very different from what I'm used to but I would love to sample it. The Blackbucks are the highlight of the trip. They are gorgeous animals and you got some great photos. You had a good hwy to travel but could we slow down next time? hahaha! Hugs, Diane
ReplyDeleteThis is truly a bird paradise. I also see the most beautiful birds. Abroad, the birds are also much more beautiful and colorful than in our little frog country, the Netherlands.
ReplyDeleteI think the Brahminy starlings are amazing. But also the bee-eaters, the deer, and the stunning nature. It is always a huge pleasure to be here.
Best regards, Helma
How exciting! I also love the photo of you, dear friend! It's lovely! Beautiful series of captures! And good food at the end of your journey, recommended by a policeman! Absolutely amazing!
ReplyDeleteTruly amazing place. Awesome landscapes. Stunning birds photos. Bee-eaters, Blackbucks looks great.
ReplyDeleteDosa looks delicious. Loved the post.
Dear Shiju, the photo of the European Bee-eaters on a wire looks almost staged! How do you always manage to get the animals to be so cooperative? These birds are truly beautiful, and I’m glad I’ve had the chance to observe them in the wild myself. Is that really a leaf the Red-vented Bulbul is holding in its beak? I would have guessed it was a butterfly or something similar! The European Roller is beautiful even when just sitting, but when it displays its wings, it’s a truly breathtaking sight!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed joining you again to see the birds, the blackbucks and the pretty blooms. And now, I’d love to try some of your "Mulbagal Dosa." I had to look up what the dish consists of—we were in Karnataka, but I’m afraid we didn’t get to enjoy this particular delicacy there.
All the best from Austria 🤗

The both dogs are adorable. Such a sweet scene indeed... But I loved reading about the birds too very much. Thank you, dear blogfriend, for sharing at MosaicMonday

I enjoyed seeing the varied photos of birds, blooms, and Blackbucks -- you really captured the magic of the day.
ReplyDeleteAnd ending with Mulbagal dosa makes it even more perfect.
Thanks for sharing this delightful journey!
You need to frame the flying roller and the flowers. Wow! What a productive morning with a happy edible ending.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful collection of photos. Happy WW!
ReplyDeleteYour nature photography is just stunning!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a wonderful trip with both beautiful birds and landscapes (including the blackbucks). Those two dogs are adorable!
ReplyDeleteHow cool that you filmed your trip on the expressway. One of the things I do (in addition to these Wordless Wednesday photos) is make music videos of journeys along highways. Mostly in here in the US, but I did shoot a few while I was in India last year. Here is one I did for the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (NE-2) outside of Delhi.
https://youtu.be/we1lRPQmiZA
Everything is beautiful, but I love the flower of the sicklebush. It's amazing!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your new trip!
Happy WW and a fine week!❤️😘
Wat een schoonheid, alles zo prachtig... Dank je dat je er bent en dat je deze schoonheid deelt! Het eten is ook erg lekker. Hartelijke groeten uit mijn Slovenië... het mooie Ljubljana, Andreja!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful place to walk and a lovely selection of photos. I love the photo of the male blackbuck prancing across the meadow. The Brahminy starling is a handsome bird that I've never seen before. The rollers and bee-eaters are so beautiful too.
