Brief visit to Kaikondrahalli

I had an enjoyable morning at Kaikondrahalli lake. This was the first birding trip there since October, 2019.  Here are some pics from the brief visit...

...

The dry trees in the water...
...

I saw a couple of Indian Spot-billed Ducks sitting on a dry tree...
...
Another one was busy preening...
...

...

...

It is the breeding time for Great Cormorants. Incubation is done by both sexes. I saw several nests...
...

One partner fetches food while the other incubates...
...
One advantage of nesting in a colony, you can chat with your neighbor when you feel lonely...
...
Partners are very caring and supportive...
...
I saw a juvenile Black Kite perched on  a dry tree...
...
A White-throated Kingfisher was seen next...
...
An Indian Spot-billed duck was roosting in peg-legged stance while keeping the other leg tucked up into its body feathers for warmth...
...
I got a closer look at one more Great Cormorant nest...
...
And the non-incubating partner is always around...
...

A couple of Brahminy Kites were busy preening...
...

...
A Little Egret was busy taking Water Striders...
...
The Pink Snakeweed plants were in bloom. They are butterfly host plants. The flowers were looking gorgeous...
...

...

...

...
A Red Pierrot butterfly was seen. Here's the beautiful underside of its wing...
...
Upperside of the Red Pierrot’s wings...
...
Another view of the lake...
...
A Common (no longer common) Kingfisher was doing what it is supposed to do, fishing...
...

...
And here's the fish...

  1. What a great series of photos this is.
Really nice to see, this species of kingfisher is a species that we don't see here
I wish you a good weekend.

  2. A great series, as usual. Love the Indian spotbilled ducks. How is it possible for these rather chubby birds to balance on one leg?

  5. As always, your images are remarkable but the young boy in the previous post learning to love nature and exploring with his camera was the best sight of all. :)

  9. It's such a joy to look at your photos and see familiar things...but different too! Like the Kingfisher that's very different from ours here in FL and the butterflies. I love the Kites too! You really get to see a lot when you go there. I hope you get to go sometime soon. Happy weekend!

  12. Can't imagine the Great Cormorants nesting high in a tree. They must be strong trees. Beautiful butterfly. I love the way most butterflies are two-sided pattern-wise. I am happy to see you got to expand your travels. I bet it felt liberating. Oh...pretty flower too.

  29. Love that butterfly, so pretty! And so are the pink flowers:) Wow, that duck preening would be a great subject to paint (if I didn't have a plethora of other things to do, lol, I might ask you for your permission later)
Am surprised the cormorants have a nest in the trees, I thought they would have it more closely to the water. Your captures have more shadow in them - a day without sun? Thank you for leaving me the link, Shiju:)

  32. I always enjoy your photographs, Shiju and this week is no exception! The dry trees are so striking, and the birda are so beautiful. I particularly enjoyed the Kingfishers and the Brahminy Kites. We have Kites that fly over our house - they live in the fields and trees nearby - but they are nowhere near as beautiful as the ones you photographed. They must be 'ordinary Kites'! Thank you for sharing and for being a part of the Hearth and Soul Link Party community.
