Wonderful lighting, he does look as if he has just wandered out of the bushes after a refreshing nap! Must have been quick thinking to take the picture and then get out of the way. I must say seeing elephants first thing would be something else, my usual morning creature is a moose, not quite so cute.
Wonderful catch!! And thanks for the illuminating answers -- It is sad to think how the poachers around the world are decimating the elephant populations.

I was about 100 meters away. I fled from there after shooting. Lone elephants can often turn violent.
