A number of Spot-billed Pelicans were floating peacefully in the quest for an unwary fish. I focused on one...

His hope was soon realized and he flew with the prized catch...

Meanwhile the Spot-billed pelican was still floating around looking for something to eat...

As I was following the pelican, a couple of Pheasant-tailed-Jacanas caught my attention...

This was my first sighting of an Adult Pheasant-tailed-Jacana in breeding plumage. Females are larger than males...

One of them took off. I liked the black border on the white wings...

Finally, after so many unsuccessful tries, the pelican could trap a fish...

It was a big fish and the scuffle between the two was intense...

A Grey heron too caught a fish...
...Now it was an Indian Pond-Heron's turn to pull out a fish from the floating vegetation...

I moved ahead and saw an incubating Pheasant-tailed Jacana, and his partner quite aggressively protecting their nest...

The females are polyandrous, laying several clutches that are incubated and raised by different males in their harem.

During the first few days of incubation, the female defends the nest, chasing other waterbirds that may approach too close. A birdwatcher saw her kill an Indian Pond-heron the previous day...

I saw a tiny juvenile tailing an adult. Can you spot it?

Top class photos today Shiju. The Pheasant-tailed Jacana is really a splendid creature, and of course at this time of year, in fine fettle. I do wonder the purpose/adaptation that are the spots on the topside of the pelican's bill? Do they help in feeding or disguising the bill in some way? Super duper pics though!

ReplyDeleteI didn't even know there was such a bird as a Pheasant-tailed Jacana. It is the most beautiful Jacana. Your pictures of the birds are fabulous. I would love to see them in person. Of course I would love to see all birds you picture here in person. Ha... Not likely to happen. I think that is why I so enjoy your excellent photos and the descriptions you show. You get interesting views for us. I like the Spot-billed Pelican too. Seeing it's huge pouch full of a fish meal is extraordinary. It is a wonder the pouch doesn't have a rip in it do to the pointy fish fins. I can't wait to see the feathered treasures from your next outing. Be well and have fun.

I didn't know the pheasant-tailed Jacanas, what pretty and interesting birds (and obviously very well-fortified too)! So cool how you captured all that prey-making too. I can well imagine that this bird watching trip was very satisfying!
